Description: The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) provides mass transit service in 36 of the 39 cities and towns within the State of Rhode Island. An 8 member Board of Directors governs the Authority. RIPTA's present fleet of vehicles contains 240 fixed route buses, 135 paratransit vans, 17 flex vans, 17 CNG powered trolleys and 3 diesel trolleys and 1 ferry vessel which are operated and maintained by 859 employees of the Authority. RIPTA's main bus boarding facility is located in the City of Providence with a satellite terminal in the City of Newport. In FY 2006, more than 24 million passengers took advantage of public transit in Rhode Island.
