PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 12, 2009) -- The Secretary of State’s office will be registering voters at Cranston High School East tomorrow as part of a new initiative designed to maintain the momentum of last year’s record-setting election season.
The 10:40 a.m. visit to Cranston East will come just two weeks after Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis kicked off his new “Voters in the Classroom” initiative, which targets students and newly naturalized citizens.
His emphasis on young people reflects the reality of a record-breaking year that saw Rhode Island set new marks for the number of registered voters as well as primary and general election turnout. More than 700,000 people were eligible to vote in last November’s election.
“Nearly 9 out of 10 eligible Rhode Islanders are already registered. The growth in our state will come from reaching out to newly eligible groups like students,” said Mollis.
Mollis plans to visit every high school, college and citizenship ceremony leading up to the 2010 elections. The stop at Cranston East is a partnership with the state Board of Elections, school administrators and the Cranston Board of Canvassers.
