Henderson Bridge repairs requires bicyclists, pedestrians to share sidewalk on westbound side

Construction is underway on the Henderson Bridge, often called the “Red Bridge,” which connects Waterman Street and South Angell Street on Providence’s East Side with Massasoit Avenue in East Providence. The first phase of construction is in the bridge’s Eastbound lanes, between Waterman Street and Massasoit Avenue.

To accommodate the construction in the Eastbound lanes, the sidewalk next to those lanes has been closed, and motor vehicles are limited to one narrow lane heading east. Bicycles and pedestrians are prohibited from the Eastbound side of the bridge while it is under construction.

Bicycles and pedestrians must use the sidewalk next to the bridge’s Westbound lanes during this phase of the construction. Bicyclists must dismount and walk their bicycles along the sidewalk. A detour for bicyclists and pedestrians headed to East Providence is in place from Waterman Street up Butler Avenue to a right on South Angell Street, where they can access the sidewalk next to the Westbound lanes.
