The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) announced today that it has earned another honor for the I-195 Relocation Project, also known as the Iway. For the second time in a week, RIDOT announced that the Iway has been recognized as tops among other transportation projects in the country.
The Iway logo – with its three arches and the tag line “Yours. Mine. Ours.” – was selected by the Publicity Club of New England for a “Bell Ringer” award in the Graphic Identity category. The award is the highest achievement given by the annual competition, which is the region’s premier public relations and communications event. The organization received a record number of entries this year, more than 800, and announced the winners on June 2 in Boston.
“This award is another great feather in the Department’s cap,” RIDOT Director Michael P. Lewis said. “It affirms the hard work the men and women of RIDOT commit each day toward completing this important highway improvement project in Providence.”
On Monday, RIDOT learned that it placed first among Northeast DOTs in a regional competition for the America’s Transportation Award from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). The winning entries at the regional level will be submitted to the national competition in the fall.
The Iway name has become widely accepted among motorists and is routinely used by media and traffic report broadcasters. The Iway project is the first time RIDOT has branded one of its projects with a unique name and logo. RIDOT collaborated with Duffy & Shanley, a Providence public relations company, on this project’s branding.
The award credits the Department for, “developing and introducing a logo or graphic element that creates, improves or repositions a brand and is critical in addressing a specific public relations challenge.” The award noted the many uses of the logo in communicating information about the I-195 Relocation Project, including a special exhibit at the Providence Children’s Museum, a series of video podcasts on the Iway, a commemorative program, and the public walk on the Iway in October 2007.
