The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will be closing the Hawkins Street Bridge in Providence to through traffic until the end of the week. As part of the bridge’s on-going repair work additional construction will be needed to ensure safety for the motoring public. The Hawkins Street Bridge travels over Route 146.
Additional repair work is needed to replace the beam seats – the concrete platform that the steel beams sit on to support the deck itself.
Once it reopens, the Hawkins Street Bridge will be posted for use only by vehicles 3 tons and under. This restriction will last approximately 3 weeks and once this phase of construction is complete the roadway will reopen to all vehicles.
Detours over Route 146 will be in place starting this evening. The suggested detour route asks drivers to use Branch Avenue, make a right onto Charles Street and then make another right onto Admiral Street which will take them to Hawkins Street. This detour works in reverse as well.
All work is weather permitting. This construction project started in Fall 2007 and is expected to be completed by Fall 2009.
