Today, the Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH) presented Dr. Fred Schiffman and the staff of The Adele R. Decof Comprehensive Cancer Center with a Community Partnership Award. This award is presented to individuals or groups in Rhode Island whose contributions are exceptional and support the mission of HEALTH.
Dr. Schiffman and his staff provided expert consultation, assistance to the Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline and facilitated specialty oncology care to former patients of a physician who had his medical license summarily suspended. This group of oncology patients needed to be evaluated on an individual basis to determine if they had received appropriate cancer care. In some instances, the Center developed and implemented new treatment plans for the patients.
Dr. Schiffman is the medical director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital and in 2007 was named Physician of the Year at by his colleagues at The Miriam Hospital. The Comprehensive Cancer Center is comprised of a multidisciplinary team that is designed to provide quality care in a comforting setting close to home.
