Mollis Launches Workplace Voter Registration Drive

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (August 27, 2008) -- Secretary of State Mollis launches a voter registration drive targeting Rhode Island’s major employers. The campaign leads up to the October 4 deadline for registering to vote in November's election.

"We want to make it easier for Rhode Islanders to register. Taking voter registration to the factory floor, the office and Main Street is simply another way to respond to the needs of our citizens," said Mollis.

The initiative kicks off this week with voter registration drives at four major Bank of America locations serving nearly 4,000 employees. The bank is encouraging its workforce to register through broadcast email, posters, incentives and its Intranet.

Bank of America, Cox Communications and TACO are among the first companies to invite us on-site to register their employees.

“Bank of America is proud to partner with Secretary of State Mollis on this important voter initiative,” said Bank of America’s Bill Hatfield. “Bank of America is a strong supporter of all education, and that includes educating employees and customers about the impact of their participation on the election process.”

In order to register, you must turn 18 years of age by November 4, be a U.S. citizen, be a resident of Rhode Island and have a valid social security number or Rhode Island driver’s license. Registering to vote is free.

The R.I. League of Women Voters, the Women's Fund and the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce joined Mollis in announcing the initiative while registering voters in Bank of America's downtown Providence branch.

Companies that are interested in hosting voter registration drives in the workplace should contact Chris Barnett at 222-4293 or cbarnett@sec.state.ri.us.
