PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 30, 2008) -- Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis will honor students from 61 Rhode Island high schools with the state’s 2008 High School Civic Leadership Award during a State House ceremony this Monday. The award is given annually to seniors who make outstanding contributions to their school and their hometown.
“This award recognizes students who show an understanding of the importance civic duty has in a democratic society,” Mollis said. “These students take the principles of civics and put them into action through their community and school involvement, as well as their personal academic success.”
Mollis asked high schools around the state to nominate one male and one female member of the Class of 2008 who best met the ideals of the award: civic contributions made within the school or community, government interest, leadership ability and academic achievement.
Sixty-one high schools ranging from Barrington High to Woonsocket High submitted nominations. The students will be honored in front of family, faculty and friends in the House Chamber on the second floor of the State House Mon., June 2, at 5:30 p.m. One-hundred-and-sixteen students will receive awards.
