MOLLIS REMINDS VOTERS ABOUT SPECIAL HOUSE ELECTION

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Dec. 17, 2007) -- The special election to fill the seat of the late Newport state Rep. Paul Crowley will take place Tues., Dec. 18.

Democrat Bud Cicilline and Republican Steven J. Coaty are facing off in District 75, which covers all by a tiny section of Newport.

Rhode Island’s general laws give the Secretary of State the authority to set special elections under certain circumstances. Crowley’s death in September with more than half his term remaining to be served is one of the triggers in the law. The other crucial factor affecting the selection of the date is the 70-to-90-day time limit set forth in the law.

Mollis collaborated with the Newport Board of Canvassers in developing the House District 75 special election calendar. Canvassing Clerk Rick O'Neill said the following polling places will be open:

Thompson Middle School, 39 Broadway Donovan Manor, 19 Chapel St. Clarke School Apts., 24 Mary St. Newport Public Library, 300 Spring St. St. Augustin's School, 5 Harrison Ave. Carey School, 27 Narragansett Ave.
