RI.gov receives national recognition by MIT for its ePayment Engine
Providence, Rhode Island (August, 2002) - Rhode Island's eGovernment portal, RI.gov, moved to the front of the eGov line when the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) School of Architecture and Planning and Accenture awarded it 1st place in the annual Digital Government Awards.
Daniel Greenwood, director of the MIT eCommerce Architecture program traveled to Providence on August 29th to present the award, marking Rhode Island a leader in eGov technology.
The Rhode Island Department of Administration launched an ePayment engine through the state's Web portal (http://www.ri.gov) to provide state and local agencies with a means of conducting online transactions. This marked the first time the state could accept credit card payments for services via the Internet.
According to Mr. Greenwood, the ePayment Engine is "Â…an inspirational application for the public good. The fact that the ePayment Engine is an enterprise-wide service, reusable by all government offices, is brilliant and key to solving fiscal hurdles."
This high profile competition judged hundreds of applications by federal, state and local governments across the country. The RI.gov ePayment Engine placed first out of 124 finalists, placing Rhode Island at the forefront of eGovernment innovation. Additional information about the award is available at the Digital Government Awards Web site, www.digitalgovawards.org.
"We are delighted with the early success of RI.gov and look forward to an ever growing eGovernment future. The ePayment Engine is a big step in the right direction," said Howard Boksenbaum, acting Chief Information Officer.
The RI.gov ePayment Engine is developed, hosted and maintained in partnership with New England Interactive.
