RI Broadcasters’ and Roberts team up to promote sales of license plate flag decal to benefit the Military Family Relief Fund, RI’s assistance fund for deployed troops and families
PROVIDENCE — Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts is urging Rhode Islanders here at home to support the men and women in the Armed Services and their families through the Rhode Island Military Family Relief Fund. Roberts launched a public service announcement promoting sales of a $5.00 license plate flag decal that will directly benefit the Rhode Island Military Family Relief Fund. The fund helps family members of mobilized National Guard and Reserves cope with financial hardships due to deployment. The public service announcement, created in conjunction with the RI Broadcasters’ Association, is attached.
“While Rhode Island men and women serve courageously overseas, their families sacrifice here at home,” Lt. Gov. Roberts said. “By purchasing a license plate decal, we can let our troops and their families know we are united, ready to lend a hand, grateful for their service, their courage and their sacrifice.”
Lt. Gov. Roberts is proud to continue the legacy of former Lt. Gov. Charles Fogarty by supporting Rhode Island’s service men and women through the Rhode Island Military Family Relief Fund that was created by Fogarty in 2004. It is administered by the Adjutant General's office through the Inter Service Family Assistance Committee (ISFAC) which approves applications for funds. The fund is supported through private donations and a check-off option on Rhode Island income tax forms. Money from the fund is distributed to families on an income-based formula to cover a variety of needs.
The flag decal is the only sticker, other than the registration sticker, that is allowed by law to appear on Rhode Island license plates. The decal was commissioned through legislation passed in 2006 by the Rhode Island General Assembly through the bi-partisan leadership of Rep. John Loughlin and Rep. Ray Sullivan.
The flag decal is now currently available for $5.00 at all DMV offices and the Rhode Island National Guard headquarters at 645 New London Avenue in Cranston. Businesses interested in pre-purchasing decals for resale to employees or customers can contact the Office of the Lieutenant Governor at 222-2371 for more information. Private donations are also accepted and can be arranged through Stacy Viens in the National Guard’s Family Assistance Center at 275-4469.
