Governor Donald L. Carcieri today announced that he will be convening the first-ever Municipal Summit on November 19th. Governor Carcieri will bring together leaders from Rhode Island's cities and towns to work on problems that each community is facing.
"It's incumbent upon us to exercise sound fiscal management and rein-in spending across the board in state government and in every single municipality in Rhode Island," said Carcieri. "This unprecedented gathering of state and local officials will enable us to discuss a vast array of issues including fiscal relations between the state and cities and towns, health care and pension costs and municipal and school budget trends to name just a few."
The Summit will feature several keynote presentations and focused break-out sessions. Participants will include an array of government leaders including the chief executives of every city, town council presidents, school superintendents and school committee chairs. Discussion points will include fiscal relationships between the state and municipalities; the fiscal condition of cites, towns and schools; municipal and school budget trends; an exploration of the school/municipal budget resolution process; and collaborations and incentives.
