The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will temporarily close the Gleaner Chapel Bridge, which carries Gleaner Chapel Road over Route 6 between Hartford Pike (Route 101) and Danielson Pike in Scituate, on Monday, March 30 for 75 days as part of a bridge preservation project.
The bridge will be closed to all traffic while RIDOT makes repairs to the bridge, including new bridge joints, concrete and steel repairs, new guardrails, a new driving surface, and painting.
RIDOT will sign a detour using Hartford Pike, Chopmist Hill Road (Route 102) and Danielson Pike. The bridge carries a low volume of traffic in a rural, residential area with approximately 900 vehicles per day crossing it. A detour map is available at www.ridot.net/DetourMaps.
The $515,000 investment in repairs at the Gleaner Chapel Bridge will address the needs of this 54-year-old bridge to prevent further deterioration and avoid a far costlier major bridge rehabilitation or replacement project. It is part of a $8.6 million project to repair 14 bridges in Foster, Glocester, Providence, Scituate and Smithfield.
All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.
The Gleaner Chapel Bridge repair project was made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
