Looking for a new opportunity this summer for hands on experience, beyond what is taught in a college classroom? The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is currently recruiting full-time college students, including civil engineer candidates, for its Summer internship program. The deadline to apply is Saturday, April 25.
Jobs will begin in May and last through the end of August. Interns are required to work between 35-40 hours per week weekdays, with salaries ranging from $14 to $25 per hour based upon experience and job classification.
Working alongside various transportation professionals in the areas of Policy, Planning, Project Management, Construction, Maintenance, Traffic, Highway Safety, Transit, Materials, Financial Management, Information Technology, Legal, Environmental, and Public Affairs, full-time college students serve to enhance RIDOT's workforce. Traditionally, the Department welcomes nearly 100 students to its internship program each summer.
Prospective interns should be prepared for a challenging and rewarding experience in a fast-paced professional environment both in and out of the office setting. In addition to assisting engineers as they oversee road or bridge construction, or testing materials such as concrete, asphalt, or gravel to ensure they meet the proper standards, there are also opportunities to research best practices and interact with local highway safety advocates and stakeholders whose joint mission is to reduce fatalities on Rhode Island roadways.
Team RIDOT Summer interns also provide hands on troubleshooting and repairing of desktop computers and tablets to the Department's 750 employees. Students can also learn more through research and cost benefit analysis, creating supplemental graphics and charts to support planning initiatives and federal grant applications, develop and maintain databases that are utilized to track and analyze data, compile and format Financial Management internal policies and procedures, and collect data necessary for responding to audits and open records requests.
Since RIDOT has an exemplary reputation with government or private companies, internships at the Department are looked upon favorably with future employers. In fact, many full-time RIDOT employees began their transportation careers as former RIDOT interns.
Online applications are currently being accepted through the related link. Various Fall semester internships may also be available to full-time college students based upon academic obligations and existing positions.
