Lane reduction needed for continued construction of new Westminster Street Bridge
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has closed one of the two westbound lanes on Westminster Street where it passes over Routes 6 and 10 in Providence at the Westminster Street Bridge.
This change is needed to continue replacement of the structurally deficient Westminster Street Bridge, one of seven deficient bridges being replaced as part of the $410 million Route 6/10 Interchange Project.
The lane reduction may cause travel delays, and motorists are asked to plan additional travel time if passing through this area. The eastbound travel lanes were reduced from two lanes to one lane in Fall 2018.
This traffic pattern will be in place for approximately one year. It will allow RIDOT to continue building the northern half of the new Westminster Street Bridge. Once complete, the Department expects to shift all traffic onto this new portion of the bridge so it can begin the replacement of the southern half. The original traffic pattern with two lanes in both directions of Westminster Street is expected to be restored in approximately two years, when RIDOT completes the reconstruction of this bridge.

All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.
The replacement of the Route 6/10 Interchange was made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
