Providence man found guilty of first-degree sexual assault

Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced that James White (age 29), of Providence was found guilty on November 12, 2019 by a Providence County Superior Court jury of one count of first-degree sexual assault. The jury returned the verdict after three hours of deliberation following a one-week trial presided over by Superior Court Justice Netti C. Vogel.

A sentencing hearing for White will be scheduled for a later date in Providence County Superior Court. He is currently being held at the Adult Correctional Institutions.

During the trial, the State proved beyond a reasonable doubt that on the evening of December 3, 2016, White sexually assaulted his girlfriend's sister in an apartment on Dexter Street in Providence.

Earlier that evening, White joined his girlfriend and her sisters out at a club in Providence. The victim became separated from her sisters and ended up catching a ride to her sister's (White's girlfriend) apartment with White.

Once inside, after White realized that his girlfriend was not home, White sexually assaulted the victim. A neighbor heard the victim's cries for help and called police.

Detective Koren Pacheco of the Providence Police Department led the investigation into the case. Assistant Attorney General Meghan McDonough and Special Assistant Attorney General Katelyn Revens prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of the Attorney General.
