Cranston man pleads to DWI charge after fatal car crash

Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced that Alpha Williams (age 48), of Cranston pleaded nolo contendere in Providence County Superior Court on October 22, 2019 to one count of driving while intoxicated, death resulting. Williams is scheduled to be sentenced before Superior Court Justice Joseph A. Montalbano on November 12, 2019.

Had the case proceeded to trial, the State was prepared to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that on March 27, 2018 Williams lost control of the vehicle he was driving and crashed, killing his passenger and friend, David Johnson.

At the time of the crash, Williams was fleeing from police after being pulled over in Johnston. Williams was on Route 6 in Providence when he crashed and was found to have a blood alcohol level above the level limit of 0.08.

The Rhode Island State Police and Johnston Police Department led the investigation into the case. Assistant Attorney General Jay Sullivan prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of the Attorney General.
