Ramp will remain closed until end of Route 6/10 Interchange project
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) today announced it will close the Westminster Street on-ramp to Route 10 South in Providence effective Monday, November 4. The closure is necessary to install steel beams for a new ramp to connect Route 10 South to Route 6 West, which is currently under construction as part of the $410 million Route 6/10 Interchange Project.
Motorists will have options to access Route 10 South depending on their direction of travel in either the Olneyville or Federal Hill neighborhoods. They include:
• West of the Route 6/10 highway corridor: Follow Westminster Street westbound and use either the Hartford Avenue or Plainfield Street on-ramps to Route 6 East, and then take the Route 10 South exit.
• East of the Route 6/10 highway corridor: Follow Tobey Street or Broadway to Harris Avenue to the Tobey Street on ramp to Route 6 West, then exit at Hartford Avenue to reverse direction to Route 6 East and then take the Route 10 South exit.
The design of the new interchange includes a new service road running north to south from Tobey Street toward Westminster Street, and a new on-ramp to Route 10 South which will open in Fall 2023. All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.
The replacement of the Route 6/10 Interchange was made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
