On Friday night, September 13, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will shift traffic to the right on I-295 South at the Exit 9 (Routes 6 and 6A) interchange in Johnston. The new traffic pattern should be in place by 6 a.m. on Saturday morning, September 14.
This lane shift is part of the ongoing $42.6 million construction project to rehabilitate bridges at this interchange. New changes in the traffic pattern for I-295 South are as follows; full closure information is available on RIDOT's website at www.ridot.net/295bridges:
• Closure of the southbound through lanes. Through traffic will utilize the new bridges on the service road.
• Access will be maintained for ramps to Route 6 West toward Hartford, Conn. (Exit 9C) and Route 6 East to Providence (Exit 9A).
• The on-ramp from Hartford Avenue/Route 6A West to I-295 South will remain closed. RIDOT has installed a temporary signal to aid motorists making left turns onto the I-295 South on-ramp normally used by Hartford Avenue eastbound traffic.
All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.
The I-295 Bridges Contract 2 project was made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
