RIDOT Completes Nayatt Road Resurfacing Project

Nearly two miles of this major route for Barrington residents gets much-needed renovation

Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) Director Peter Alviti, Jr. gathered with local and state leaders today to celebrate the completion of the Nayatt Road Resurfacing Project in Barrington. The road is a major connector route for residents and visitors, providing access to Nayatt School, the Rhode Island Country Club and nearby Barrington Beach.

"Like the large number of structurally deficient bridges we are working to rehabilitate, many segments of our roads are in tough shape and badly in need of resurfacing," Director Alviti said. "Nayatt Road was certainly one of them. We will continue to work aggressively to bring all areas of our transportation system into a state of good repair."

RIDOT's $3.9 million project was completed on time and on budget. It addressed 1.8 miles of Nayatt Road from Washington Road to Rumstick Road. Some sections of the roadway, especially the western half from Washington Road to Collins Court, were so badly deteriorated they had to be completely rebuilt. RIDOT used a technique called pavement reclamation in which the base of the roadway is reconstructed to provide a long-lasting repair.

The project included adding new granite curbing and sidewalks from Rumstick Road to Broadview Drive. Drainage structures were replaced along the western half of the project to eliminate periodic flooding from stormwater runoff.

RIDOT worked closely with the community to minimize the impact of construction. This included weekly project updates to the community and coordination with the Barrington School Department so their improvements at Nayatt School would be done in concert with the roadwork. The Department also worked closely with Rhode Island Country Club to minimize disruption for those visiting the golf course or attending tournaments, weddings or other events.

The Nayatt Road Improvement Project was made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and meet federally mandated bridge sufficiency levels and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
