The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) today announced that it will close the Barbs Hill Road Bridge in Coventry on Wednesday, June 19 for approximately four months while it replaces this structurally deficient bridge.
The structure carries Barbs Hill Road over the Moosup River in the rural western portion of Coventry. It serves a mostly residential community north of Route 14 (Plainfield Pike), close to the Foster line. Approximately 100 vehicles cross this bridge daily. It is posted at 3 tons, prohibiting trucks and school buses from crossing the bridge.
During the closure, motorists will utilize Potter Road or Plainfield Pike to Moosup Valley Road as a detour.
The closure period for this $3.6 million project was scheduled during the summer and fall months to coincide with a low-flow period for the Moosup River to minimize environmental impact.
RIDOT anticipates reopening the bridge in late October. Final project completion is expected in Spring 2020. All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.
The replacement of the Barbs Hill Road Bridge is made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
