The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) today announced overnight lane closures on Route 44 as part of an intersection improvement project along the roadway and at the I-295/Route 44 Interchange in Smithfield.
Starting Monday night, June 3, work will take place along Route 44, at Levi Lane, and at The Crossing at Smithfield, Monday through Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Since most operations are planned during the overnight hours, no major disruptions are anticipated during morning and evening rush hour. This major thoroughfare, carries 30,000 vehicles per day. One lane of traffic will always be open in each direction.
Construction for this $1.3 million project is slated for completion in Spring 2020. In addition to reducing congestion in this area, the project will also bring existing sidewalks into Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance.
The intersection safety improvements to Route 44 at Smithfield Crossings project is made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
