Secretary Gorbea reminds Rhode Islanders of important deadlines for September primaries

PROVIDENCE, RI – Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea is reminding eligible Rhode Islanders of two important deadlines for the September 12 primaries.

The first, quickly approaching date is the voter registration deadline on Monday, August 13. Eligible Rhode Islanders can go to vote.ri.gov to register to vote online or update their voter information if they have recently moved or changed their names. Eligible Rhode Islanders without online access should complete the process by contacting their local board of canvassers at their city or town hall.

"In order to be a voter, you need to be prepared. This means making sure your voter registration is up to date and you understand your options for casting a ballot if you can't make it to the polls on September 12 to vote in the primaries," Secretary Gorbea said.

Although the August 13 deadline falls on a state holiday, every city and town has made arrangements for residents to register or change their address using a paper form on the last day to register to vote. Those looking to register or update their information can download a voter registration form at vote.ri.gov.

The second approaching deadline is for those who are unable to make it to the polls on primary day and wish to vote by mail. Voters must submit their mail ballot applications to their local board of canvassers by August 22. Voters can download the mail ballot applications at vote.ri.gov or by calling their local board of canvassers to request one.

For the first time in Rhode Island, Secretary Gorbea is including return postage for all mail ballots, making it easier to vote by mail. All mail ballots must be received by the State Board of Elections by 8 p.m. on September 12.

For more information on submitting a mail ballot or any other information related to elections and voting in Rhode Island, please visit the Rhode Island Department of State's Voter Information Center online at www.vote.ri.gov or call (401) 222-2340.
