PROVIDENCE, RI - Governor Gina M. Raimondo released the following statement today on the news that U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy is retiring:
"I join all Americans to express my sincere appreciation for Justice Kennedy's decades of service to our nation.
"I'm also deeply concerned about the direction the Supreme Court will take. This past week, we've seen the Court uphold an immoral and unnecessary ban on immigration from Muslim nations, as well as an attack on the labor movement and America's middle class. President Trump and his allies strive to take us backwards. A Trump Court is a threat to women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, working families, immigrants and the American Dream.
"As Rhode Islanders, we can stand up to protect the people that President Trump seeks to marginalize. It's now more urgent than ever that the legislature pass the Reproductive Health Care Act so that we can protect a woman's right to choose in Rhode Island against any decision a Trump Court might make."
