PROVIDENCE, RI - Upon news that President Trump has signed an executive order ending the family separation policy, Governor Gina M. Raimondo issued the following statement calling on the Trump Administration to immediately reunite the families it tore apart because of the immoral, inhumane and intolerable family separation policy it created:
"President Trump's policy ripped families apart and he must immediately reunite innocent children with their parents. Ending the abhorrent family separation policy is not enough. The children who have been shipped off to far away states, thousands of miles from their parents, need to be returned to their parents.
"Good-hearted, decent people from across Rhode Island, across the nation and across the aisle have called the President out by name for this policy. Those who called out stood up for our American values and those who stood by silently will have to explain their silence to future generations.
"As long as I am Governor, Rhode Island will stand against policies that rip families apart. We will not support federal policies or federal actions that contradict our state's founding covenant that there is a place here for everyone."
