DEM Plans Controlled Burn At Nicholas Farm In Coventry This Spring

PROVIDENCE - The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) will conduct a controlled burn of 20 acres of Nicholas Farm Wildlife Management Area in Coventry this spring. The burn, conducted for up to three days, will help control underbrush as well as enhance wildlife habitat and support firefighter training.

The burn will take place in an area north of Nicholas Road, south of the Moosup River and west of Roaring Brook. Exact timing will depend on weather and wind conditions. DEM personnel, along with the Western Coventry Fire Department and Northeast Forest and Fire Management, will oversee the burn and will notify area residents when a burn date is scheduled. Nicholas Farm comprises nearly 1,600 acres.

Project partners include the US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) Federal Aid to Wildlife Restoration Fund, Wildlife Management Institute, USFWS Partners for Wildlife Program, and the Ruffed Grouse Society.
