Raimondo Recognizes Reading Week

Promotes Childhood Literacy as Part of Third Grade Reading Challenge

PROVIDENCE, RI- Governor Gina M. Raimondo issued a proclamation today declaring the week of April 9-13 as Reading Week 2018 in Rhode Island. While schools across the state celebrate Reading Week at different times throughout the spring, the governor and members of her Cabinet will visit schools next week to read to students and talk about the importance of literacy.

In her proclamation, Raimondo highlights the Third Grade Reading Challenge, an ambitious plan she launched in September 2016 to double the number of students reading proficiently by third grade by the year 2025. Reading proficiently by the end of third grade is a crucial indicator in a child's development and future academic success.

"When we empower students to become fluent, joyful readers by the third grade, we set them on a path for success in school and in life," said Raimondo. "I issued this challenge and reconvened the Rhode Island Children's Cabinet because I recognize that early literacy is absolutely essential to the academic achievement of all students and is a key factor in our collective economic success."

The governor will visit Blackrock Elementary School in Coventry next Wednesday as part of this Reading Week celebration. She will participate in a school-wide parade at 10:00 a.m., and then read to a fourth grade class immediately afterward.
