The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has modified its schedule for closures this week of a portion of Route 152 (Newman Avenue) as part of the Newman Avenue Bridge Replacement Project in East Providence.
The closure affects through traffic on Newman Avenue between Pawtucket Avenue in East Providence and Arcade Avenue just past the state line in Seekonk, Mass.
Each day this week, the roadway at the bridge will close at 6 a.m. and reopen at 4 p.m. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, the bridge will remain closed through the overnight hours. The schedule change is needed due to recent weather conditions affecting the Department's schedule for paving, guardrail and striping work this week.
During the closures, motorists are advised to follow the recommended detour using the turn-by-turn directions described below. Local access will be maintained. Get detour maps at www.ridot.net/detourmaps.
Eastbound:
- Follow Route 1A/Pawtucket Avenue south
- Stay left for Route 114A/Pleasant Street
- Pleasant Street becomes Fall River Avenue
- Turn left onto Route 44/Taunton Avenue
- Turn left onto Arcade Avenue
- Return to Newman Avenue
Westbound:
- Follow Arcade Avenue south
- Turn right onto Route 44/Taunton Avenue
- Turn right onto Route 11A/Fall River Avenue
- Fall River Avenue becomes Pleasant Street
- Stay right for Route 1A/Pawtucket Avenue
- Return to Newman Avenue
Following the daytime closures, when Newman Avenue reopens to traffic, the current alternating one-way traffic pattern will once again be in effect.
The structurally-deficient Newman Avenue Bridge, built in 1934, carries approximately 9,000 vehicles per day on Newman Avenue over the Ten Mile River. The $4.7 project involves replacing the entire bridge.
The replacement of the Newman Avenue Bridge was made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
