Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced that David "WeWe" Acevedo (age 26), of New Bedford, MA, was sentenced yesterday by Superior Court Justice Robert D. Krause to 16 years to serve and a consecutive 20 years suspended with probation, non-paroleable for the June 21, 2016 shooting outside the Vault Lounge, located on Atwells Avenue in Providence, RI. Acevedo previously pleaded guilty on February 14, 2017 to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, discharge of a firearm while in the commission of crime of violence, and possession of a firearm without a license.
Had the case proceed to trial, the State was prepared to prove that at approximately 12:45 a.m. on June 21, 2016, after being ejected from the Vault Lounge, Acevedo retrieved a firearm from his motor vehicle and opened fire at individuals standing near the entrance of the nightclub, striking one person in the ankle.
Acevedo fled the scene and was apprehended on July 13, 2016 in Massachusetts.
Providence Detective Ricardo Silva led the investigation and Special Assistant Attorney General Peter Roklan and Joseph McBurney prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of Attorney General.
