Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced that Robert Martin (age 56), of Pawtucket, pleaded guilty on Friday before Superior Court Justice William Carnes to one count of second degree child molestation. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Martin was sentenced to 30 years, with 15 years to serve and the remainder suspended with probation. In addition, Martin was ordered to have no contact with the victim, must undergo sex offender counseling and will be subject to sex offender registration and community notification upon his release.
Had the case proceeded to trial, the State was prepared to prove that during March 2014, Martin molested a female relative who was four and one half years of age. The child disclosed the abuse to her mother, who in turn brought the child to Memorial Hospital. The child was transferred to Hasbro Children's Hospital for a full medical examination. She was later interviewed at the Aubin Child Protection Center at Hasbro Children's Hospital by a clinical social worker and also gave a video recorded interview at the Children's Advocacy Center at Day One.
Pawtucket Police Detective Richard Laforest led the investigation. Assistant Attorney General Stephen Regine prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of Attorney General.
