The Providence County Grand Jury reported out a secret and sealed indictment charging Paul Labbadia (age 49), of Coventry, with two counts of obtaining money under false pretenses over $1,500 and one count of filing a false document.
Once the indictment was handed down by the grand jury, an arrest warrant for Labbadia was issued. The Rhode Island State Police Financial Crimes Units arrested Labbadia at his residence.
The indictment was unsealed today when Labbadia was arraigned in Providence County Superior Court before Magistrate Patricia Lynch Harwood. The defendant pleaded not guilty and was released on $25,000 personal recognizance. The Court set November 16, 2015 for a pre-trial conference.
It is alleged that between April 7, 2007 and October 7, 2015, Labbadia obtained medical payments of approximately $155,000 and cost of living adjustment (COLA) payments of approximately $23,000 from the City of North Providence to which he was not entitled to receive.
It is further alleged that between April 7, 2007 and October 7, 2015, Labbadia obtained approximately $45,000 in pension benefits from the State of Rhode Island of which he was not entitled to receive.
The State also alleges Labbadia provided false information on his application for retirement benefits.
The investigation was led by the Rhode Island State Police Financial Crimes Unit.
