Attorney General Kilmartin Re-Elected Chair of NAAG Eastern Region; Re-Appointed Chair of Consumer Protection Committee and Training Committee

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin was recently re-elected to serve as chair of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) Eastern Region, and re-appointed as co-chair of the Consumer Protection and NAAG Training Committees. In addition, Kilmartin will continue to serve as the NAAG representative to the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP). Kilmartin was also appointed to serve on several other NAAG committees, including the Criminal Law Committee, Law Enforcement and Prosecutorial Relations Working Group, and Veterans Affairs Committee.

As chair of the Eastern Region, Attorney General Kilmartin will continue to serve on the NAAG Executive Committee, which is charged with the leadership of Association operations. In this capacity, Kilmartin has brought multiple NAAG conferences to Rhode Island: in 2014, he hosted a team of prosecutors from across the country for trial advocacy training, the NAAG Advanced Bankruptcy Seminar on government-funded affordable housing and other issues relating to the recent mortgage settlement, and a two-day conference to address the issue of sexual assault on college campuses. In 2013, Kilmartin hosted the North American Regional Conference of the IAP in Providence.

"I am honored that my fellow attorneys general have put their trust in me to continue serving on NAAG's Executive Committee. This role has enabled me to strengthen my relationships with colleagues from across the country as we work together on issues that face our states and our nation," said Attorney General Kilmartin. "In addition, I have been able to leverage this leadership position to bring attention to critical issues including sexual assault on college campuses, consumer protection and housing issues."

NAAG Committees are charged with studying all substantive matters within their jurisdiction and recommending policy positions and other matters to the attorneys general for action by the full Association.

The Consumer Protection Committee offers direction and helps shape the agenda for NAAG for consumer protection issues including mortgages, scams, identity theft, and data breaches.

The National Attorneys General Training and Research Institute (NAGTRI), a NAAG branch, provides high quality, responsive, and innovative training to attorneys general offices. The committee provides Institute direction and funding guidance.

The Criminal Law Committee works to provide timely and useful information relating to criminal justice and law enforcement matters to the attorney general community. The Committee monitors court decisions and legislative developments, offers the attorneys general research, training, and technical assistance, and responds to developing concerns.

The Law Enforcement and Prosecutorial Relations Working is made up of principal representatives from NAAG, the National District Attorneys Association and the U.S. Department of Justice. The goals of the Working Group are to enhance the efforts of federal, state and local prosecutorial and law enforcement agencies, and to promote and encourage cooperation and information sharing among the various levels of government. The Group works to foster an understanding of the different approaches taken by federal, state and local law enforcement and to provide a forum for an open and candid exchange of ideas and concerns.

The Veterans Affairs Committee works to address issues specific to veterans, most recently addressing higher education and mortgage foreclosure problems.

The International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) was formed in 1995 following encouragement from the United Nations. It has over 1400 individual members and 120 organizational members from more than 130 countries. IAP publishes the U.N. Guidelines for Prosecutors, addresses the growth in serious international and transnational crime, and allows prosecutors to develop networks and communicate with each other quickly.
