Orlando Luciano Pleads Guilty to Assault, Firearm Charges

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced that yesterday Orlando Luciano, 23, with a last known address of 104 Vandewater Street, Providence, pleaded guilty before Superior Court Justice Robert D. Krause to two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a firearm without a license and discharge of a firearm resulting in injury. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Luciano received a total sentence of 37 years with 17 to serve and the remainder suspended with probation, non-parolable.

Had the case proceeded to trial, the State was prepared to prove that on June 16, 2013, Darren Main arranged over Facebook to sell a Gucci belt to Luciano. Later that evening, Main's mother, Melody Main, drove him to the Arbor Glen housing projects to meet Luciano. When they arrived, several people surrounded the motor vehicle and Luciano fired a .40 caliber pistol several times into the driver's side window, striking both Darren and Melody in their upper right arms. The victims fled in their motor vehicle and drove themselves to Rhode Island Hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Providence Police were able to develop Luciano as the suspect. He was later identified by the victims. The firearm was not recovered.

"The defendant lured his victims in with the promise of buying a belt with the sole intention of robbing them at gunpoint," said Attorney General Kilmartin. "This case is a chilling reminder of the damage young men with illegal guns can inflict on our community. If we are to make our communities safer and stronger, we must get illegal guns out of the hands of violent criminals."

Providence Police Detective Carlo Sical led the investigation. Special Assistant Attorneys General Joseph McBurney and Sara Tindall-Woodman prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of Attorney General.
