Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin will join the Rhode Island State Police (RISP), the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) and others at a press conference to release 2014 data for motor vehicle fatalities in Rhode Island among all drivers and young drivers age 16 to 24. Kilmartin is expected to announce that motor vehicle fatalities have declined steadily over the past 12 years.
The press conference is scheduled for Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at 12:30 p.m. at Cranston High School East, 899 Park Avenue, Cranston.
Also attending the press conference will be Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, police chiefs from several municipalities, members of the Rhode Island Traffic Safety Coalition, Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal Chief Magistrate William Guglietta and several community groups.
Kilmartin is releasing the data in conjunction with the "It Can Wait, Make a Pledge Against Texting and Driving" educational campaign at Cranston High School East. Kilmartin, in partnership with the RISP, RIDOT and AT&T, launched the "It Can Wait" program in Rhode Island at Cranston High School East in 2012. Since then, Kilmartin has made 50 school visits across Rhode Island where more than 18,000 high school students have taken the pledge to not text and drive.
After the press conference and the "It Can Wait" video, more than 700 high school juniors and seniors will pledge to never text while driving.
