The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is reminding motorists that a series of overnight closures for a portion of Route 146 South in Providence, as well as a closure for I-95 South's Exit 22 (Downtown Providence/Routes 6 & 10), continue next week. The closures are needed for the construction and installation of large overhead highway signage.
Next week's travel impacts on Sunday through Tuesday nights, December 28 - 30 are as follows: • At 9 p.m.: Left lane closed on I-95 North and right lane closed on I-95 South between Exits 21 and 23. Also, right lane closed on Route 146 South from the Admiral Street exit to I-95. • At 1:30 a.m.: Route 146 South closed from the Admiral Street exit to I-95. The Douglas Avenue on-ramp to Route 146 South, along with the two right lanes on I-95 South and Exit 22 are also closed. • Between 2 - 4 a.m.: A brief, 15-minute full closure of I-95 South just after Exit 23. • By 4:30 a.m.: All lanes and exits will be reopened.
Signed detour routes have been established for Route 146 traffic as well as Exit 22 destinations. The detour route for Route 146 utilizes Charles Street, Ashburton Street, Canal Street, Steeple Street, and Memorial Boulevard to reach on-ramps for I-95 or Routes 6 and 10. Exit 21 is the detour route for the Exit 22 closure, using Atwells Avenue, Broadway, Empire Street, Fountain Street, and Francis Street to reach Memorial Boulevard and the on-ramps for I-95 and Routes 6 and 10. Find detour maps online at www.dot.ri.gov/detourmaps.
