Traffic Advisory: Route 114 Lane Closures Begin Wednesday, October 8 for Bridge Repair

Repair work on the Wampanoag Trail Bridge in East Providence begins next week, requiring the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) to close a lane in each direction on Route 114 (East Shore Expressway) in East Providence between I-195 and Route 114A (Mink Street). The restriction will be in effect for about two months.

Through a contract with Cardi Corporation, RIDOT will repair a portion of the bridge that has been struck twice by oversized vehicles. In order to complete this repair as quickly as possible, northbound traffic will be reduced to one lane and shifted to the left, temporarily sharing a portion of Route 114 South. Southbound traffic also will be reduced to one lane, shortly after merging onto the East Shore Expressway from I-195 East's Exit 7 (Route 114).

One lane will be closed in each direction Tuesday, October 7 from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Wednesday, October 8 at 6:30 a.m., RIDOT will again close one lane in each direction and finalize the northbound lane shift. The traffic pattern will remain in effect until repairs are completed in early December.

During the closure period, on- and off-ramps connecting Wampanoag Trail to Route 114 will remain open. RIDOT also will maintain two-way traffic on the Wampanoag Trail Bridge while it is being repaired.

Motorists can expect delays when traveling through the construction zone, particularly at morning and afternoon rush hours. RIDOT recommends planning additional travel time or seeking alternate routes during these periods.
