Providence, R.I.—Governor Lincoln D. Chafee and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced today that Rhode Island has started to receive deliveries of road salt from its supplier.
"With Rhode Island expected to receive a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, Rhode Islanders need to use caution," Governor Lincoln D. Chafee said. "Try and avoid travel, and give our crews the time they need to clear the roads."
International Salt, which is the supplier, was able ship salt to Rhode Island. Shipments from New Haven to a RI DOT's facility started arriving in the afternoon. Estimates bring the supply closer but still below normal operating levels, and caution on the roads are strongly advised. A larger shipment of salt is scheduled to be in the state on March 6.
Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency, the R.I. State Police, RI DOT and other government agencies continue to coordinate and monitor the weather conditions through Sunday and Monday. Currently, the forecast is calling for a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain that could affect the morning and evening commutes on Monday. Rhode Islanders should anticipate hazardous road conditions and plan travel arrangements accordingly. Try and refrain from unnecessary driving throughout the duration of the winter storm event and continue to monitor.
