As part of the Providence Viaduct Bridge Replacement Project, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will temporarily close Exit 22 (Downtown Providence/Routes 6 & 10) from I-95 South, beginning Saturday, March 8. The exit will reopen on Tuesday, March 11.
The exit is scheduled to close at 1 a.m. on Saturday and reopen at 5 a.m. on Tuesday. This closure will impact peak travel times on Monday, and motorists should expect delays, especially during rush-hour periods. Note: We are working to expedite this operation and get the exit open sooner in order to minimize traffic impacts. An advisory will be distributed if there is an update to the schedule.
Motorists are advised to follow the signed detours available at www.dot.ri.gov/detourmaps or to seek alternate routes. Digital message boards along I-95 will advise motorists of the closure, beginning on Saturday, March 1.
During the closure period, we will be pouring two sections of concrete bridge deck: widening Exit 22 before it splits into the three existing ramps (Exit 22A, Exit 22B, and Exit 22C), and widening the Exit 22B (Routes 6/10) ramp. The entire exit must be closed during this operation in order for the concrete to properly cure.
