Real-Time Travel Information Now Available on Route 146

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is expanding its real-time travel information program that currently exists on I-95 and I-195 to now include Route 146. Effective Tuesday, January 8, 2013, RIDOT's existing electronic message board on Route 146 Southbound just before Branch Avenue in Providence will list travel time estimates to I-195 (the Iway) and Route 4.

"Real-time travel information is another resource to improve the overall driving experience on our interstate system," said RIDOT Director Michael P. Lewis. "We will continue working to adjust these messages and provide an expanded coverage area so more motorists will be able to utilize this service."

Travel times are displayed to motorists on fixed overhead and portable roadside electronic message signs from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. This information complements other travel planning services RIDOT has for motorists including 511, the Highway Advisory Radio (1630 AM) and live traffic cameras. RIDOT also has real-time travel estimates and a travel time survey on its website at www.tmc.dot.ri.gov/traveltimes/.

The travel times are calculated using sensors that were previously put into place to measure traffic volumes. The equipment measures the speed of traffic in real time as vehicles travel from one sensor to another, and determines an approximate travel time for each segment of road along the route.

Those with questions can contact RIDOT's Customer Service office at 401-222-2450 weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional information may be available on RIDOT's social media sites on Twitter, and Facebook.
