Members of the media are invited to join Senator Jack Reed, Town of Smithfield officials and Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) officials tomorrow, Friday, October 19, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. to celebrate the early opening of the Stillwater Viaduct in Smithfield. While there, guests will be able to tour the new Stillwater Viaduct and RIDOT will announce the bridge opening date, more than a month ahead of schedule.
RIDOT closed the bridge in March 2012 to complete a rehabilitation project for the 80-year-old structure, which carries Route 116 (George Washington Highway) over the Stillwater Reservoir.
Since the tour will be within an active construction site, guests will be provided with hard hats and safety vests. Closed-toed shoes are also required.
Directions and parking: Take I-295 NB to Route 44 West. Turn right onto Cedar Swamp Road, immediately after Apple Valley Mall. Then turn right onto Route 116 North. Follow Route 116 North to the bridge. Please park on Route 116 before the bridge.
