The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) announced that it is instituting temporary restrictions for trucks at the Route 6/Route 10 Interchange in Providence beginning this weekend.
Trucks heading east on Route 6 and those heading south on the Route 6/Route 10 Connector will be directed use the right travel lane only in the area of the Route 6/Route 10 interchange. This section of highway is supported by the Huntington Viaduct, a 1,340-foot, multi-span structure that carries segments of both highways and connecting ramps. Built in 1951, the structure is structurally deficient and in need of rehabilitation.
RIDOT is implementing the truck restriction as a precautionary measure to ensure the longevity of the bridge. The Department will soon seek bids on a shoring system that will fully support the structure until it can be rehabilitated.
Those with questions can contact RIDOT's Customer Service office at 401-222-2450 weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional information will be available on RIDOT's Twitter and Facebook sites.
