The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) announced that it will close a section of Reservoir Avenue (Route 2) in Providence where it passes over the Amtrak rail line, close to the intersection with Elmwood Avenue, on Monday, April 23, 2012. The closure will allow RIDOT to repair the deck of this bridge in as short a time frame as possible.
Through a $299,000 contract with Manafort Brothers Inc., the Department will remove the asphalt surface of the bridge, make repairs to the bridge's deck and resurface the bridge. The Department's goal is to re-open the bridge in approximately one month.
The 76-year-old bridge is considered structurally deficient. It is owned by the City of Providence.
Motorists will be directed to follow a detour route using Elmwood Avenue and Roger Williams Avenue. Access will be maintained for businesses and homes north of the intersection of Reservoir Avenue and Roger Williams Avenue, as well as south of the intersection of Reservoir Avenue and Elmwood Avenue. A map showing the detour is available at www.dot.ri.gov/travelri/detourmaps.asp.
