RI DMV Advises Owners to Renew Registrations by Mail or Online
March Madness is here! It's a time to decide the annual champion of college basketball in the U.S. and March is also time to renew the registrations for all commercial vehicles in Rhode Island.
While great strides have been made to improve customer service and wait times over the last several months, RI DMV Interim Administrator Carole Dwyer is urging motorists to avoid the lines by processing their registration renewals by mail, online with a credit card, or through the drop box located at DMV locations. AAA members may also renew their registrations at any AAA branch office.
"Our entire DMV staff will be doing their very best to process your transactions during this extremely busy time," noted Dwyer. "We encourage customers to assist us by steering clear of the DMV and avoiding walk-in registration renewals."
Registration renewals may be processed as follows:
By Mail: Send the Registration Renewal notice to the DMV Attn: Registration Renewal, 600 New London Avenue, Cranston, RI 02920. If you did not receive a notice in the mail, use the Registration Renewal form found on the DMV website.
Drop Box: Deposit your Registration Renewal notice or Registration Renewal form in drop boxes located at all DMV branch locations. Please allow two weeks for processing.
Online renewal with a credit card: Refer to the table of plate types to determine if you can renew your vehicle's registration online.
To process a renewal online, motorists will need:
Current vehicle registration or renewal notice. Current vehicle insurance card. A credit/debit card and billing address. A printer connected to your computer to print receipt that will serve as renewal confirmation.
After renewing online, customers will receive a new registration certificate and decals in the mail. Please allow two weeks for processing. The confirmation page should be printed once the online renewal is completed to serve as proof of registration.
Municipal Tax Restrictions: If you pay property taxes to one of the following towns for your vehicle; Barrington, Central Falls, Exeter, South Kingstown, or Warren you may not use the online renewal service due to municipal tax clearance requirements.
