The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will help brighten the holidays for Rhode Islanders in need by presenting a check for $1,225 to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank at 200 Niantic Avenue in Providence on Friday, December 9, 2011 at 11 a.m.
RIDOT's donation, equal to 3,675 pounds of food, or over 1 ½ tons, was raised through a staff fundraiser and bake-off held at the agency's main headquarters in Providence in early November. The bake-off was attended and judged by celebrity guests Johnson & Wales University, College of Culinary Arts Associate Instructor Frank Terranova and WJAR Channel 10's Weekend Sunrise Anchor and Reporter Mario Hilario.
On hand for Friday's check presentation will be RIDOT Director Michael P. Lewis and Rhode Island Community Food Bank Chief Executive Officer Andrew Schiff.
The Rhode Island Community Food Bank provides food to people in need and promotes long-term solutions to the problem of hunger. Since 1982, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank has solicited, stored and distributed surplus food and grocery products to qualified member agency programs that serve Rhode Island's hungry. Millions of pounds of donated food and household products are distributed to the community through their network of more than 250 member agency food programs across Rhode Island.
