The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has recommended the closure of the locally-owned Arkwright Bridge, which carries Hill Street over the Pawtuxet River on the Coventry/Cranston border. Both communities are scheduled to close the 123-year-old span tomorrow, Friday, September 30, 2011.
Following a recent inspection, RIDOT determined that the weight limit should be reduced to less than 3 tons. Based upon this, RIDOT recommended that the Town of Coventry and the City of Cranston close the structure.
Previously, this structurally deficient bridge carried a 5-ton weight limit. A detour route will be signed by the Town of Coventry.
