The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) tonight, Tuesday, March 15, 2011, is scheduled to close a lane on Route 1 North at the South Kingstown/Narragansett line as part of ongoing work to rehabilitate bridges in the area of the Dillon Rotary.
Tonight the Department also will close an on-ramp to Route 1 North from the corner of Point Judith Road, Woodruff Avenue and South Pier Road. The closures will be in place by early Wednesday morning.
The closures will remain in effect until early May. This will allow for final paving of Route 1 at the Route 108 exit, as well as construction of a new center median barrier – additional work that could not be completed last fall. Due to cold temperatures late last year, RIDOT chose to reopen the on-ramp and restore traffic patterns on Route 1 prior to the onset of winter. This allowed for safe travel and snow clearing operations.
The $6.6 million project was funded entirely by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. In total, RIDOT rehabilitated three structurally deficient bridges, each more than 45 years old, and made numerous improvements to the Dillon Rotary and Route 108.
