Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin Announces Resolution of Charges Against Providence Police Patrolman Robert Hamlin in Operation Deception

Hamlin pleads guilty to three counts of conspiracy, sentenced to 10 years, three to serve

In Providence County Superior Court today Robert J. Hamlin Jr., DOB: 1/6/77, a resident of East Providence, pled guilty before Judge Robert D. Krause to three counts of conspiracy, as charged, in conjunction with his involvement in Operation Deception. Judge Krause sentenced Hamlin to a 10 year sentence, with three years to serve.

Robert Hamlin is the brother of Albert Hamlin and, prior to his arrest, he was working as a Providence Police Officer assigned as a school resource officer at Central High School. He pled today to two counts of conspiring with Albert Hamlin to deliver cocaine and one count of conspiracy to deliver marijuana.

“As a 24-year-veteran of the Pawtucket Police Department, I know how important it is for the public to have trust and faith in their police officers. The actions by Mr. Hamlin and his co-defendants damaged that trust, and is an insult to the dedicated members of the Providence Police Department,” said Attorney General Peter Kilmartin.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant Attorneys General Matthew Dawson and Pamela Chin, on behalf of the Office of the Attorney General.

With today’s plea, only one case in Operation Deception remains open, against Khalid Mason, who is scheduled for trial on February 28, 2011. Two defendants, Albert Hamlin and former Providence Police Officer Joseph Colanduano, pled guilty and are awaiting sentencing.
