Joined by Dozens of Community Volunteers, Roberts Anticipates Holiday Spirit Alive and Well in Rhode Island
Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts, accompanied by staff and dozens of volunteers from around the state, will receive donations for the 8th Annual Operation Holiday Cheer drive on Saturday, December 11th from 9 am until 1 pm at the Army National Guard Armory, 1051 North Main Street in Providence. Corporate and community sponsors as well as the general public have already made or pledged thousands of dollars in donations and wish list items. More is expected to arrive on Saturday.
The lieutenant governor's office has led the appeal for support from the public in a month-long drive for donations of goods and approximately $12,000 in funds to pay for postage to ship the packages.
"Every year there is an enormous outpouring of community support to bring Operation Holiday Cheer to our troops overseas," said Lt. Governor Roberts. "The overwhelming generosity and commitment of our community and our sponsors to the troops is truly inspiring," Roberts said.
Volunteers have been organized by the state family support program of the RI National Guard. Anyone can make a donation of any size or amount and bring it to the Armory on Saturday. The troops' official wish list can be found on the Lt. Governor's web site www.ltgov.state.ri.us/ohc or by contacting the office for more info at 401-222-2371. Online donations can be made via the American Red Cross RI Chapter web site at www.riredcross.org.
On Saturday, December 18th, volunteers again will assemble at the North Main Street Armory from 9 am to 1 pm to pack the boxes and prepare them for shipping.
