The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will be closing a section of Point Street this coming weekend for construction associated with the Iway project.
Beginning tomorrow, Friday, October 22, 2010 at 6 p.m., RIDOT will close the Point Street overpass between West Franklin Street and East Franklin Street. The Department expects to re-open the Point Street overpass on Monday, October 25 at 3 p.m.
The closure is necessary to allow RIDOT to pour concrete on a bridge that will carry traffic on a new on-ramp to I-95 South. Because of the proximity of the new on-ramp to Point Street, the Point Street overpass will remain closed to eliminate vibration that could adversely impact the new concrete while it is curing.
During this closure, motorists will need to follow a detour using Plain Street, Borden Street, Eddy Street and Richmond Street to return to Point Street. Maps showing the detour route will be posted on RIDOT’s website (www.dot.ri.gov). Motorists and hospital employees should allow themselves additional travel time, especially during the Monday morning commute.
Traffic on the Point Street overpass was recently converted to one-way eastbound earlier this month with the establishment of a new traffic circulator using the service roads West Franklin Street and East Franklin Street on either side of the I-95 corridor.
Motorists with questions can contact RIDOT’s Customer Service office at 401-222-2450 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additional information will be available on RIDOT’s website (www.dot.ri.gov) and its social media sites on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and Blogger.
