Survey Crews to Limit Access to the East Bay Bike Path on June 28

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is announcing that access to the East Bay Bike Path is scheduled to be limited next week while survey crews perform a video inventory of the path. The East Bay Bike Path at 14.5 miles is one the gems of RIDOT’s 50+ mile network of bike and pedestrian paths.

Crews are scheduled to be on the East Bay Bike Path on Monday, June 28, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., weather permitting, recording images of what a user would see while traveling down the bicycle path. Features such as the pavement condition, signs, pavement markings, trees, and fences will be recorded to inventory the State’s bike path system.

During the survey operation, video images will be captured every 50 feet. A 7’2” wide vehicle will be traveling slowly down the bicycle path in the northbound or eastbound direction as it performs its video inventory. This will restrict most of the path’s width and make it difficult for users to “share the road.”

“For safety sake, RIDOT prefers not to have anyone on the bike path during the survey,” said RIDOT Director Michael P. Lewis. “Once completed, we can utilize the survey images from the computer screens in our office rather than having to go out to a particular site. This will save us valuable staff resources.”

Additional paths will be surveyed over the summer.
